Made up of members of Visitations, A Sparrow and Drona Parva, this is gorgeous. Murky magical atmospheres and dreamlike drones inhabit the first side and cosmic psych-folk-drone with all the cultish zoned intensity of some of the MYMWLY / Brothers of the Occult Sisterhood releases, on the other. If talking about music is like dancing about architecture, maybe writing about music is like choreographing about architecture?If so, this Attar Cups tape would take place in an empty barn. Rats scurry in the moist heat of the decaying hay. A barn owl coos an eerie warning from the rafters. The chill wind sings through the window’s broken teeth, and the building cracks its old joints.Enter the dancers. They move with ceremonial stillness, bobbing gracefully, as if in a pool. Come to think of it, add a few strings, shakers, and knobs and that might describe this recording session pretty well. Attar Cups features half the psych scene of Portland, Maine pensively tone-conjuring in some kinda cold, airy space. The A side outlines the space with oblique electric gestures, and the flip fills it with wisps of spacey spider-webbed blues guitar, anxious shakers, and goner tongues. The band sounds utterly alone, with all the melancholy that entails, but joyous too, as if in hermitage.The music breathes like a sleeping animal; its methodical expansions and contractions have a secret, nocturnal vibe, requiring silence and close attention to register. Recommended for insomniacs, regardless of musical taste, as a soundtrack to the night’s languid shadow puppetry. (Bryan Berge, Tape Hiss)
